iittala Summer 2007

Coming Soon to FinnishGifts.com

The Iittala summer range of 2007 gets its inspiration from the sun and from water. In Iittala’s range of high-quality summer novelties and seasonal products you can find the season’s best gifts to take with you when visiting friends or attending family celebrations. For Finns, the blueness of water often symbolizes summer. Why not preserve the blue days of summer for ever with a set of Aino Aalto drinking glasses, which have their 75th birthday this year, or with Oiva Toikka’s Suvisirri or the Suomi vase, both created by the artist to celebrate Finland’s 90th anniversary year.

The summer collection gets its flash of hot sun from the new orange-colored HotCool drinking glass, a seasonal summer novelty. Summery table settings also benefit from a hint of orange in the new light blue Origo. Its fresh blue stripe motif is brightened with a touch of orange.

Toikka’s vase celebrates Finland’s 90th year of independence
In 1993, Professor Oiva Toikka designed a collection of glass objects, which became the Suomi range. The collection consisted of a vase, a platter and bottles of various sizes. Products in the series were sold through the Iittala mail-order catalogue. At the time, they formed part of the Pro Arte Collection.

The vase (220 mm) included in the collection has now been launched in a new ultramarine version to celebrate the 90 years of Finnish independence. The new vase further inspired Oiva Toikka to design a solid blue bird, Summer Stint, for the festive year. It is easy to equate the tiny bird with the history of the small and feisty Finland, as it travels through its years of independence.

Aino Aalto – the eternally young classic
Aino Aalto’s contribution to Finnish design is much more than the sum of the products that she designed. She was one of the founders of Artek, spending several years as its managing director. She had great influence as mediator of new ideas and instigator of discussion in design circles. Aino Aalto’s views on the impact of the environment on peoples’ mental state are entirely valid in this day and age, for instance in the sphere of urban planning. A book entitled ”Aino Aalto” has been published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of her birth. It provides a fascinating insight into the life of this quietly determined woman.

The Aino Aalto drinking glass range was created in 1932 for a competition which had been organized with the aim of producing new molded glass that would be suitable for mass production. The name given to Aino Aalto’s entry was ”Bölgeblick”; which is an old Swedish word depicting the rings appearing on the surface of water when a stone is thrown in. As had been the case with the Aalto vase, the Aino Aalto drinking glass range was produced in the colors that were to hand in the factory: a yellowy brown, blue, green, grey and transparent.

The range received instant international recognition. It was introduced in London as early as 1933 and in the 1936 Milan Triennial it was awarded the Gold Medal. These days it is internationally considered as the purest manifestation of Finnish modernism. The Aino Aalto glass is multi-purpose, stackable and works well with different table settings, but above all, its simple design makes it a timeless classic. The last occasion on which the range was on prominent show was in an exhibition organised in MoMa in New York. For the exhibition, Curator Paola Antonelli had selected about 120 ingenious utility objects which she called ”Humble Masterpieces”.

For the anniversary year, the Aino Aalto drinking glasses come in packs of four, each special pack containing either four glasses in aqua or four in different shades of blue. Aino Aalto glasses are now available in eight different colors.
