Marimekko’s “La Boca” Line

La Boca

The Finnish designers at Marimekko share the philosophy that all design be inspired by everyday life.  For that reason, Marimekko brings in young and promising talent who can offer a fresh and exciting look to its recognizable brand. At 23, Marimekko designer Maija Louekari has created work that is both light-hearted and practical, and which successfully carries the Marimekko identity to a fresh, young audience.

Louekari’s designs are rendered directly from her notebook sketches, which come from observations of the outside world. On the Marimekko website, she is quoted, “My ideas come from observing my surroundings…I’m interested in people and behavior, in things that don’t always seem to be so important. The by-products of life, so to speak.” Louekari’s work is playful; she uses bold colors, repetitive lines, organic rhythms, and humorous scenarios to give movement and three-dimensionality into otherwise static and flat planes.  Her “La Boca” series, which includes latte mugs, refrigerator magnets, cotton fabrics, and tea towels, transforms everyday household objects into relevant works of art.
